NetLogic Microsystems showcases 10-100 Gigabit multi-protocol PHY products

OFC/NFOEC 2010, SAN DIEGO & MOUNTAIN VIEW, USA: NetLogic Microsystems Inc., a worldwide leader in high-performance intelligent semiconductor solutions for next-generation Internet networks, will be showcasing a broad portfolio of high-performance, market-leading networking and communications PHY products for 10/40/100 Gigabit Ethernet and 8.5 Gigabit FibreChannel at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition (OFC) 2010 in the San Diego Convention Center, Calif., from March 23-25 at booth #3045.

As a leader in 10, 40 and 100 Gigabit Ethernet PHY solutions, NetLogic Microsystems will be demonstrating the superior performance, ultra-low jitter, low-latency and low-power capabilities of its entire line of best-in-class PHY products. NetLogic Microsystems’ highly integrated single-, dual- and quad-port PHY devices support multiple protocols and multiple media types – single-mode fiber, multi-mode fiber and direct-attach copper - for high-density data center and enterprise applications, and are manufactured in advanced process technologies such as TSMC’s 40nm node.

“We are excited to be demonstrating the industry’s highest performance and broadest portfolio of 10GE, 40GE, 100GE and 8.5G FibreChannel PHY products that are powering next-generation data center and telecommunications infrastructure networks,” said Stefanos Sidiropoulos, vice president of Physical Layer Products at NetLogic Microsystems. “We continue to lead the industry in technical innovations and excellence for best-in-class PHY and SerDes devices that deliver superior performance, low-latency, low-power and small footprint.”

“NetLogic Microsystems has now established itself as the market share leader in 10 Gigabit Ethernet PHYs by port count,” said Jag Bolaria, analyst at The Linley Group. “By being the first to market with multi-channel 10-100G PHY products in the advanced 40nm technology, NetLogic Microsystems offers optical PHYs that meet the performance, density and power requirements of next-generation data centers.”

NetLogic Microsystems’ NLP10142C 100GE and NLP10142X 40GE PHY solutions, respectively, feature an innovative architecture and advanced circuit technologies to deliver the highest 100GE and 40GE performance and density, superior jitter performance and lower power consumption.

The NLP10142C 100GE PHY supports 100Gbps transmissions over at least 40km on single-mode fiber (SMF) cabling, at least 100m on OM3 multi-mode fiber (MMF), or at least 10m over a copper cable assembly. The 100GE demonstration at OFC will be based on a MLD (multi-lane distribution)-to-CPPI application with a 100G CXP module, while the 40GE demonstration will be based on a MLD-to-XLPPI application with a 40G QSFP+ module.

These devices exceed all the electrical parameters of the nPPI interface as defined in P8023.ba Annex 86A and are fully compliant with the CR4/CR10 PMDs as defined in P802.3ba Clause 85. The NLP10142C and NLP10142X PHY solutions are offered in lead-free packaging, to allow customers to develop environmental-friendly system solutions that comply with certain green-initiative regulations.

In addition, NetLogic Microsystems will be showcasing a 10GBASE-KR demonstration for backplane applications using the AEL3020 PHY device that supports up to 40 inches of FR4 backplane traces with 2 connectors. The AEL3020 PHY device integrates NetLogic Microsystems' industry-leading and market-proven Electronic Dispersion Compensation (EDC) technology, and is compliant with IEEE 802.3aq LRM and 802.3ap KR standards.

The device also incorporates link diagnostic capabilities including voltage-time offsetting, BER calculators and traffic monitors which when complemented with highly programmable Ethernet frame, PRBS and custom test pattern generators and checkers, can provide highly granular data on the health of a high speed serial link in a dense and cross talk dominated back plane environment. The integration of external board passives and a highly simplified power supply distribution circuit, enables high density layouts in area-constrained designs.

NetLogic Microsystems will also be demonstrating its NLP1220 dual-channel 8.5Gbps FibreChannel device. The NLP1220 PHY repeater device offers best-in-class power consumption and latency to customers developing next-generation data center switches and storage Host Bus Adapters (HBAs).

The NLP1220 PHY device supports 2/4/8G auto-negotiation capability and integrates the receiver and transmitter SerDes functions on a single chip with on-chip clock drivers, multiple loop-back features and PBRS generation and verification for both the line side and system side. The integrated low-power equalization engine doubles the reach of FibreChannel signals on PCB traces and cables, supporting up to 15 meters on 24/26 AWG cables and up to 10 meters on 30 AWG cables.
