Vitesse crosspoint scales for extreme networking environments in HD broadcast video systems

CAMARILLO, USA: Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. announced the industry’s lowest power, highest performance crosspoint engine, the VSC3340-31, a flexible, asynchronous 3.5 Gbps 40x40-port device optimized for high-definition (HD) broadcast video applications.

Boasting premier power scaling Green Modes that reduce power dissipation by as much as 54 percent over existing solutions, the 130 Gbps capacity of the VSC3340-31 makes it ideal for HD broadcast video equipment requiring higher density, lower power system designs.

HD video requirements for professional broadcast routers/switchers and HDMI switching are managed by the VSC3340-31’s full support of HDMI, DVI, DisplayPort and SMPTE protocols.

With the insurgence of higher bandwidth protocols and 3 Gbps high definition (3G-SDI) feeds, HD networks and studio equipment must manage up to thousands of live links while maintaining signal integrity and system performance. As link densities increase in limited areas such as HD production studios and their datacenters, reducing power becomes critical from both a cost and reliability perspective.

Setting a new level of signal integrity performance at low power, the VSC3340-31 demonstrates Vitesse’s established commitment to green operation, through multiple low-power modes and per-lane power-down to further reduce power consumption.

HD video designers can now use the VSC3340-31 to reduce overall power dissipation because only those channels with active signals dissipate power, thereby allowing for breakthrough energy savings as low as 95 mW per channel at 3.2 Gbit mode.

Programmable with a standard two-wire or four-wire interface, the VSC3340-31 also features advanced programmable input signal equalization and output pre-emphasis, ideal for a variety of cable, printed circuit board, or backplane lengths and signal conditions.

“The cost, performance and energy-efficiency advantages of the VSC3340-31 are substantial and stand to significantly benefit HD broadcast video designers, thanks to the elimination of previous tradeoffs between excess bandwidth, high performance and low power,” said Juan Garza, product marketing manager at Vitesse.

“Vitesse has been instrumental in delivering more eco-efficient solutions at lower cost points. The VSC3340-31 has become the crosspoint engine for new HD broadcast video systems, uniquely scaling for both bandwidth and power requirements, as needed.”
