Portable entertainment devices consume $5 billion in semiconductor value in 2011

DUBLIN, IRELAND: Research and Markets has announced the addition of the "Portable Entertainment Device Silicon and Non-Silicon Revenue Opportunity" report to its offering.

In-Stat's latest research report, Portable Entertainment Device Silicon and Non-Silicon Revenue Opportunity (#IN1004763D), is an Excel-based deliverable that provides an extremely high level of detail illustrating the anticipated market growth for some of the most popular portable consumer electronic (CE) segments available today.

This research provides a comprehensive overview of worldwide unit shipments, bill of materials, and both the silicon and non-silicon revenue opportunities found within select CE markets. Portable CE segments included in this report are digital photo frames, e-readers, personal navigation devices, audio-only MP3 players and personal media players.

While this is an Excel-based deliverable, In-Stat offers a wide range of analyses on these markets, as well as additional portable CE segments. For more information, refer to In-Stats Portable Entertainment Device (PED) service.

Executive summary
The market for semiconductors in portable entertainment devices will exceed $5 billion in 2011, according to market research firm In-Stat. Devices such as e-readers, portable navigation devices, and personal media players continue to demand more semiconductors, growing the market from just under US$4 billion in 2000.

The dedicated e-reader is definitely the category star for chip vendors, says In-Stat analyst, Stephanie Ethier. E-readers will continue double digital shipment growth over the next five years. By2014, the total silicon revenue opportunity for e-readers will reach $1.5 billion, comprising the second largest semiconductor TAM of the category.

In-Stat's findings include the following:

* E-reader unit shipments will reach 33.5 million units by 2014.
* Despite a maturing market, portable media players (PMPs) still represent the largest silicon revenue opportunity among the portable CE markets, reaching $1 billion in 2014.
* The processor total available market (TAM) for e-readers will reach $251 million by 2014.
* Shipments of wireless digital photo frames (DPFs) will start to outpace non-wireless DPF shipments by 2013.
* Personal navigation device (PNDs) shipments are set to decline in 2014 as a result of the proliferation of navigation capability in handsets.
