Cypress ships one billionth USB controller

SAN JOSE, USA: Cypress Semiconductor Corp., today announced that it has shipped over one billion USB controllers.

Cypress entered the USB market in 1996 with the goal of “Making USB Universal” and has since become the leading USB device supplier in a wide variety of applications.

Cypress offers the industry’s most complete portfolio of USB devices, including low-, full-, and high-speed controllers, embedded hosts, hubs, application specific bridges, transceivers and wireless solutions.

Fueled by consumer demand in USB-enabled applications such as PC peripherals, consumer electronics and mobile handsets, and augmented by increasing usage in industrial and automotive applications, Cypress has shipped more than 500 million USB devices since 2005.

Cypress’s well established portfolio includes enCoRe and EZ-USB USB controllers, West Bridge peripheral controllers and WirelessUSB 2.4-GHz radios. Cypress’s hallmark USB device, the EZ-USB FX2 controller, continues to provide unparalleled flexibility to customers seeking to add USB to new applications.

“With media consumption continuing to grow and SuperSpeed USB on the way, our customers continue to turn to Cypress as the leader in USB,” said Cypress President and CEO T.J. Rodgers.

“We were the first supplier to provide high-volume, flexible USB controllers, blazing the trail that led to USB adoption in products everywhere. We intend to maintain our leadership with new and innovative USB solutions.”

“With its established portfolio and robust customer support, Cypress is well positioned to maintain a strong position in USB,” said Brian O’Rourke, principal analyst at In-Stat. “We project the overall market for USB-enabled devices to grow to over four billion devices by 2013, driven mainly by its adoption across a broad range of PC and consumer electronics applications.”

“Cypress earned its market leadership position in USB’s first decade by building a broad portfolio of products around customers’ needs for PC peripherals applications,” said Alakesh Chetia, vice president of the USB business unit at Cypress.

“In the present, our newest MoBL-USB and West Bridge products are bringing USB to mobile phones, and we offer devices optimized for automotive and industrial applications. We are committed to extending our leadership in the future with introductions of new technologies such as USB 3.0.”

Cypress also provides the industry’s most comprehensive USB software support, reference designs and driver suites. This “whole product” support enables customers to bring USB-enabled products to market faster and has helped to forge long-lasting relationships with leading manufacturers worldwide.
