ST demos strategic approach for development of broadcast/broadband consumer market

GENEVA, SWITZERLAND: STMicroelectronics is painting a picture of a future media-rich consumer life with the demonstration of a broad range of set-top box (STB) solutions under the theme 'The Future of Entertainment' at the International Broadcasting Convention (IBC 2010).

"Following network convergence trends, consumers expect a wider range of home entertainment services, through more exciting and intuitive user experiences, while reducing their impact on the environment," said Philippe Lambinet, Executive Vice president and GM of ST's Home Entertainment and Displays Group. "ST is driving the technologies that enable the fusion between broadcast and broadband to open up new services and greater interactivity on the TV."

At the show, ST will be showcasing a variety of service-expanding middleware and applications running on STi7105 and STi7108 platforms. These same platforms will also be running advanced broadband technologies, such as Adobe Flash for Digital Home, the Android platform, and the Nokia Qt cross-platform application framework.

In its continuing drive to improve user experience and offer the fullest multimedia experience possible, ST, in conjunction with its partners, will demonstrate several spectacular 3D user interfaces, powered by the STi7108 with OpenGL-ES 2.0. The STi7108 platform's processing power enables the set-top box platform to deliver 3D gaming, as well as the streaming of full-HD stereoscopic 3DTV.

ST will also demonstrate its energy-saving solutions for consumer electronics products, including power management and standby power capabilities without compromising on system performance such as fast resume from standby. Based on environmentally-friendly and energy-saving technologies, ST enables full-function entertainment using minimal power.

ST has also established an energy-saving strategy that covers energy generation, transportation, and consumption. Employing the latest semiconductor manufacturing techniques, ST has introduced an ultra-low-power technology platform and produced and encapsulated its semiconductor using environmentally-friendly materials.
