LSI begins shipping 28nm custom silicon for datacenter and mobile network apps

MILPITAS, USA: LSI Corp. is now shipping 28nm custom silicon solutions for next-generation datacenter, cloud and mobile networking applications. The design platform combines a broad portfolio of silicon-proven IP with an advanced design methodology, enabling OEMs to create highly differentiated solutions for critical infrastructure such as servers, storage systems, routers, switches and mobile base stations.

The explosion of data traffic and the increase in connected devices such as smartphones, tablets and ultrabooks is driving the need for high-port count, high-bandwidth intelligent systems. OEMs require custom silicon to meet the demands from traffic growth while differentiating their solutions in the marketplace.

"Network traffic continues to grow at an accelerating rate, creating new challenges and opportunities," said Bryan Lewis, research VP, Gartner. "Custom ASICs will play an important role in helping address the increasing demands placed on OEMs and chip suppliers as they build next-generation systems."

The LSI custom silicon platform comprises leading-edge process technology, a broad family of silicon-proven IP and a flexible engagement model allowing highly integrated silicon solutions that deliver power, performance and time-to-market benefits. Compared to the previous generation, the 28nm custom silicon platform consumes 40 percent less power while offering double the density and up to 25 percent higher performance.

"Leading OEMs require highly innovative solutions to address market demands," said Sudhakar Sabada, senior VP and GM, Custom Solutions Division, LSI. "Collaborating deeply with customers and partners, LSI is demonstrating leadership in delivering innovative custom solutions to the marketplace."
