CAMARILLO, USA: Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. has shipped more than five million of its VSC7716 burst-mode transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs) for Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) in Fiber-to-the-X (FTTX) applications. With Infonetics Research estimating approximately 5.7 million EPON Optical Line Termination (OLT) ports to be shipped by 2012, the milestone indicates Vitesse’s market leadership position in burst-mode EPON TIAs.
“Vitesse’s burst mode TIA provides the industry with a high-performance solution that will allow the optical module vendors to facilitate volume shipments into the EPON market,” said Dr. David Li, chief technical officer of Hisense Broadband Technologies. “The chip’s high sensitivity, fast settling time and large dynamic range are features that are in high demand by the telcos.”
To support the ever-growing need for broadband access driven by online video, social networking and other data services, PON applications worldwide continue to grow. Amongst the various FTTX topologies, the EPON market has grown quite dramatically over the last five years especially for the Asia Pacific region, with more growth anticipated. According to Infonetics Research, the combined worldwide spending on all Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) and Fiber-to-the-Building (FTTB) equipment will grow from $825 million in 2009 to $3.3 billion in 2014.
“We are extremely pleased with VSC7716’s performance and Vitesse’s ability to support high production volumes,” said Kou-Wei Wang, vice president and general manager at CyOptics, a leading provider of optical components for broadband solutions. “The device has proven to be the industry standard by exceeding the EPON parameters, while maintaining extremely high reliability in the field.”
“The VSC7716 is a field-proven TIA that exceeds IEEE Ethernet PON (EPON or GEPON) 802.3ah requirements, giving customers broad flexibility in FTTX applications,” said Richard Interrante, director of product marketing for Vitesse. “The VSC7716’s zero reliability failure rate in the field is further testament to the device as an industry benchmark solution.”
The VSC7716 is shipping in volume production.
