MOUNTAIN VIEW, USA: Synopsys Inc. announced that Wilocity has successfully taped-out its multi-gigabit Wireless Gigabit Alliance-compliant system-on-chip (SoC) utilizing Synopsys' broad portfolio of high-quality DesignWare IP and assistance from Synopsys Professional Services.
The DesignWare IP used in the SoC included PCI Express, embedded memories and logic libraries. Wilocity's SoC is based on the Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig) and IEEE802.11ad draft specifications, enabling multi-gigabit wireless for a wide range of applications, from I/O to networking to video.
By leveraging the breadth of Synopsys' tools, DesignWare IP solutions and expertise from Synopsys Professional Services, Wilocity was able to reduce power consumption in some of the more complex arithmetic clusters by approximately 50 percent, increase performance by 65 percent and improve utilization by up to 70 percent compared to their previous design executed with a competitive solution.
"As consumers demand greater mobility, device manufacturers are requiring advanced mobile computing platforms that enable them to deliver thin and light devices without sacrificing performance and functionality," said Ido Naishtein, director of physical design at Wilocity. "Wilocity's use of proven DesignWare IP and close collaboration with Synopsys Professional Services has enabled us to successfully produce multi-gigabit wireless chips that are optimized for today's mobile devices."
Working in close cooperation, Wilocity and Synopsys designers made significant improvements in the architecture, partitioning and algorithm design. During the implementation phase, Wilocity leveraged tools from Synopsys' Galaxy Implementation Platform and the physical design experience of Synopsys Professional Services consultants to help them achieve their aggressive design targets and deliver a successful tape-out.
"Synopsys understands the importance of providing companies like Wilocity with high-quality IP as well as with expert design assistance to enable them to meet their design objectives and customer commitments," said John Koeter, vice president of marketing for the Solutions Group at Synopsys. "Wilocity's exceptional improvements in power, area and performance in its WiGig design are testaments to Synopsys' ability to provide comprehensive solutions of tools, IP and consulting that help our customers deliver differentiated products in the competitive mobile device market."
