IXYS intros 1.2KV converter-brake-inverter module with XPT IGBT and integrated active rectifiers

SWITZERLAND: IXYS Corp. announced the introduction of the MIXA60WH1200TEH, with ratings of 1.2KV and 60A. This module demonstrates new level of integration, combining Bipolar and XPT IGBT power semiconductors for a wide range power control applications.

“This unique module integrates an Active Rectifier bridge with a Brake and an Inverter into one package, the E3-Pack. The Active Rectifier, using IXYS thyristors in the bridge, enables a soft start mode for motor drives and inverters. For power supplies and UPS’s, it enables ‘in rush current limit’, which results in reduced current losses and reduced input power dissipation,” said Jeroen van Zeeland, head of marketing at IXYS GmbH in Germany.

“By adding digital MCU control, using our Zilog MCUs and our driver ICs, our customers can further reduce standby power with these modules, and activate the power when needed,” commented Dr. Nathan Zommer, CEO of IXYS. “This architecture is a natural fit for modern power systems that can be controlled digitally to save energy in the input stage.”

The E3-Pack is a fully isolated, highly reliable module package with a height of 17 mm. The Inverter stage of this unique module is designed with short circuit rated XPT IGBTs that are also specified with wider reverse bias safe operating areas (RBSOA) enabling rugged operations in a greater power envelope.

With this development, an IXYS customer can reduce the size and weight of the final power system, thus decreasing the cost and the carbon footprint for the total product, facilitating higher power densities and greater material efficiency.
