Semiconductor microelectronics segment poised for strong 2011

BOSTON, USA: With consumer demand for sophisticated electronic devices sparking a surge in new product announcements, Strategy Analytics foresees 2011 growth for the microelectronics segment of the compound semiconductor industry.

The recently published Strategy Analytics GaAs and Compound Semiconductor Technologies Service (GaAs) viewpoint, “Compound Semiconductor Industry Review December 2010: Microelectronics,” captures the product, financial, contract and technology announcements for microelectronic companies such as RFMD, Skyworks Solutions, TriQuint Semiconductor, Avago Technologies, Freescale Semiconductor and Cree for December 2010.

“Rapid consumer adoption of smartphones and tablets is creating a wave of innovation and product development in the compound semiconductor industry,” noted Eric Higham, Director of the Strategy Analytics GaAs and Compound Semiconductor Technologies Service. “The December announcements serve to re-affirm our view that the industry will see continued growth in 2011.”

Asif Anwar, director in the Strategy Analytics Strategic Technologies Practice added: “The financial results from compound semiconductor device suppliers have been strong throughout the year. Now several foundries are implementing plans to increase capacity.”

This viewpoint summarizes December 2010 financial, product, contract and employment developments from major GaAs and silicon suppliers, addressing a variety of commercial and military applications using gallium arsenide (GaAs), gallium nitride (GaN), silicon germanium (SiGe) and complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) technologies.
