Nuvoton intros industry’s first ChipCorder IC with integrated telephone features

SAN JOSE, USA: Nuvoton Technology Corp. has introduced the industry’s first ChipCorder voice/audio device to enable proven telephony functions in commercial and consumer systems.

The new ChipCorder ISD61S00 provides a digital-audio interface, audio storage interface, powerful macro-scripting ability, and streamlined programmability that allow designers to develop telephony-based systems with audio prompting, multi-language options, and fast, address-free recording and playback of up to 64 minutes.

With its extensive array of audio features, the ISD61S00 helps system designers create a wide range of non-PC communication platforms, such as personal emergency response systems (PERS), docking stations, home security systems, point-of-sale (POS) terminals, telephone answering devices (TADs) and vending machines.

Featuring an operating voltage as low as 2.7V, the versatile ISD61S00 can perform a range of powerful telephony-based communications functions, such as the detection and generation of both dual-tone multi-frequency (DTMF) signaling and frequency-shift keying (FSK) for Bell 103, Bell 202 or V.23 modem.

Additionally, the chip features a public switched telephone network (PSTN) interface, a customer alert signal (CAS) detector, CPT (call progress tone) detection, and ring detection.

A system’s audio quality is enhanced by the ISD61S00’s echo-cancellation feature and pulse-code modulation/inter-IC sound (PCM/I2S) digital audio interface. The chip’s 16 general-purpose I/O (GPIO) pins are accessible through its serial peripheral interface (SPI) ports, easing designers’ task of programming systems. Furthermore, the ISD61S00’s telephony features enable dial-out alerts via residential telephone lines.

“Given Nuvoton’s broad portfolio of advanced digital-audio devices, it was a natural and logical extension of our success to expand ChipCorder technology into a broader base of applications,” said Saleel Awsare, president, Nuvoton Technology Corp. America.

“The ISD61S00 takes advantage of the ChipCorder’s highly integrated non-volatile voice and audio chip technology – known to and used by manufacturers worldwide -- and empowers system designers to blend that technology with distinct characteristics to deliver a new generation of telephony-based PERS, POS, security and other advanced systems.”
