Wintegra broadens WinPath processor family

AUSTIN, USA: Strengthening their processor portfolio, Wintegra announced the newest member of their third generation processor family, the WinPath3-SuperLite.

The WinPath3-SuperLite (WP3-SL) provides higher performance than the previous generation WinPath devices at an aggressive price for high volume applications. WinPath3-SuperLite complements the fully-featured, faster WinPath3 that was introduced last year.

With the addition of the WP3-SL, Wintegra has the widest performance range of software compatible processors in the access infrastructure marketplace. This new device, plus Wintegra’s production quality software opens a new range of price sensitive applications like microwave backhaul, low cost wireless aggregation line cards, enterprise femto and pico base stations, access routers, business IADs, and VDSL and PON pizza boxes.

For example, in the wireless infrastructure the WP3-SL enables Wintegra to replace low cost ASICs and FPGAs used to terminate T1/E1 and implement PWE3 (pseudo-wire emulation edge to edge), providing much more functionality and flexibility.

“The Winpath3-Superlite is the second punch in Wintegra’s one-two punch strategy,” said Bob Wheeler, Senior Analyst at The Linley Group. “The WinPath3-SuperLite is faster than their previous generation, yet is targeted underneath the recently sampling WinPath3, and allows Wintegra to extend its reach to a set of lower-end higher volume markets than they ever have before.”

The WinPath3-SuperLite includes a high performance MIPS 34K core running up to 650 MHz for control path processing. Various versions of the WP3-SL are available for different markets. It offers up to 24 10/100 Ethernet ports, six 1 Gb Ethernet ports or three 2.5 Gb Ethernet interfaces. For TDM designs it has up to 16 E1 or T1 ports.

It also provides connectivity to POS and UTOPIA devices and PCIe. It provides ample performance for its target markets, up to 6 Mpps including classification, policing and shaping, yet will be less than 5 watts in most configurations. Support is provided for low-cost DDR2 and DDR3 external memories which enable market leading lowest cost system designs.

“The WinPath3-SuperLite is a great low-cost addition to our processor portfolio,” said Robert O’Dell, Founder and EVP of Marketing and Sales at Wintegra. “Since the WP3-SL is software compatible with other WinPath devices, now designers have scalable processor solutions for a wide range of products from cost sensitive microwave backhaul designs to very high performance LTE base stations and Carrier Class IP equipment.”

WinPath3-SuperLite devices and development systems will be available later this quarter. Production qualified devices will be available in 2Q 2010. Some versions of the WP3-SL are offered at sub-$25 prices for high volumes.
