SiliconCore patent issued for laser diode driver “Thin Gate Driver”

MILPITAS, USA: SiliconCore Technology, a leading fabless analog products company, announced that the US Patent Office has approved its patent application for “Higher Performance DVD Writing Current Circuit” and has issued the patent under patent number US 7,916,613 B2.

The technique described in the patent uses a proprietary semiconductor circuit design with a “Thin Gate Driver” output stage to achieve very fast switching of the high currents generated by the Laser Diode Driver (LDD) for high speed CD and DVD recording, while maintaining excellent linearity and minimal undershoot and overshoot.

This function is one of the most critical specifications of the LDD devices used on CD and DVD recorders in the PC market. The “Thin Gate Driver” technology has been applied successfully by SiliconCore Technology on its full range of LDD devices and it has enabled the company to achieve over 50 petcent worldwide market share, with LDD customer shipments to date exceeding 300 million units.

Eric Li, president and CEO of SiliconCore, said: “We are very pleased to have been awarded this important patent, it is a testament to our innovative design capability and will allow us to continue our leading market share position in the LDD market. SiliconCore Technology has developed a very strong R&D capability, this is essential for the company growth and for our diversification plans into the LED driver space.”
