Mindspeed intros industry’s first commercially available 10G-EPON burst-mode receiver chipset

OFC/NFOEC 2011, NEWPORT BEACH, USA: Mindspeed Technologies Inc., a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions for network infrastructure applications, has announced the world’s first commercially available 10 Gigabit Ethernet Passive Optical Network (10G-EPON) burst-mode receiver chipset at The Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition (OFC) and the National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC 2011), which runs today through March 10, 2011, at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Mindspeed’s 10G burst mode dual-rate transimpedance amplifier (TIA) and burst mode multi-rate limiting amplifier work together to provide a complete, cost-effective solution for 10G-EPON Optical Line Terminals (OLTs) and is backward-compatible with existing GEPON designs.

“Mindspeed’s breakthrough solution will accelerate the adoption of 10G-EPON networks by enabling multi-service access equipment to handle higher data rates and more broadband users,” said Hasnain Bajwa, senior vice president and general manager of the lightspeed connectivity solutions (LCS) business unit at Mindspeed Technologies. “Our dual-rate burst-mode receiver solution is compatible with earlier gigabit-rate solutions, and leverages our extensive experience in TIAs and limiting amplifiers to deliver a proven, high-value platform for next-generation equipment design.”

The M02138 TIA joins Mindspeed’s broad offering of high-sensitivity TIA solutions that have raised the industry’s performance bar, while reducing the cost of manufacturing PON equipment. The latest low-power device features dynamic rate selection with fast response times in burst-mode 10Gbps and 1Gbps operation.

It also includes burst-mode photocurrent monitoring with a combination of accuracy and output settling time that exceeds OLT requirements. The device is optimized for 10.3Gbps/1.25Gbps performance and can be assembled in a cost-effective standard 5-pin or 6-pin receiver or bi-directional optical subassembly (ROSA/BOSA).

The TIA’s companion, the M02142, is a high-performance, feature-rich 11.3 Gbps limiting amplifier that includes integrated fast loss of signal (LOS) detection and is well suited for 10G-EPON burst-mode applications. The compact, low-power device provides input sensitivity of 3 millivolt peak-to-peak (mVpp) at full data rate and, with its wide input dynamic range, can also accept up to 1.6 Volts peak-to-peak (Vpp) differential input voltage. Fast output settling time and dynamic rate selection are supported for 10G-EPON OLT applications.

Mindspeed is collaborating with Cyoptics to create a receiver module for customers using its burst-mode TIA. Cyoptics’ ROSA combines Mindspeed®’s M02138 with Cyoptics’ avalanche photodiode (APD).

“We are pleased to be working with Mindspeed on this important new solution,” said Kou-Wei Wang, Vice President and General Manager for OEM Business with Cyoptics. “This collaboration combines Mindspeed’s expertise in high-performance TIAs with Cyoptics’ leadership in the monolithic and hybrid integration of optical components into sub-assemblies. Mindspeed’s burst mode receiver is the key design block for our 10G-EPON OLT solution and we are excited to be working with Mindspeed to offer our customers this critical ingredient for 10G-EPON deployment.”
