Cypress’s PSoC 3 architecture enables Avnet’s Spartan-6 LX16 FPGA evaluation board to interface to analog world

SAN JOSE, USA: Cypress Semiconductor Corp. announced that a single Cypress PSoC 3 programmable system-on-chip integrates precision analog sensing, system management and user interface functions on Avnet’s low-power Xilinx Spartan-6 LX16 FPGA Evaluation Board.

The PSoC 3 device performs power management, CapSense touch-sensing, USB/UART/SPI connectivity and configuration of the Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) directly on the board.

Flexible PSoC 3 I/Os also enable the board to interface to the “analog world” through an expansion connector that accepts an included Avnet LCD board, user prototype boards and various Cypress expansion boards available from Avnet Electronics Marketing.

As demonstrated at recent Avnet Electronics Marketing and Xilinx x-Fest training events, the PSoC 3 device dynamically reconfigures its 20-bit Delta Sigma Analog-to-Digital Converter to perform precision voltage-monitoring and current-monitoring on 1.2V, 1.8V and 3.3V power supply rails.

PSoC 3 digital resources manage complex power-on sequencing and sleep modes for the board, which is powered by a lithium-ion battery, a USB cable connection or a 12-volt adaptor. These programmable digital resources also enable direct serial configuration of the FPGA, and SPI, I2C and UART interfaces throughout the board.

The evaluation kit also allows users to build multiple PSoC 3 user interface functions with 4 CapSense touch-sensing buttons, an integrated USB UART bridge to a host PC and a large segment LCD expansion board.

Users can program and debug the PSoC 3 device on the board by purchasing a CY8CKIT-002 PSoC MiniProg3 Program and Debug Kit, which sells for US$89. Compatible Cypress expansion boards are also available through Avnet Electronics Marketing.

“With its programmable analog and digital resources and integration capabilities, Cypress’s PSoC 3 device provides an excellent complement to the Xilinx Spartan-6 family,” said Tim Barber, senior vice president of design chain business development for Avnet Electronics Marketing. “The Spartan-6 LX16 FPGA kit continues Avnet’s efforts to provide engineers with the ability to quickly develop complete solutions.”

“Avnet’s Spartan-6 LX16 FPGA Evaluation board uses the PSoC platform to deliver analog-intensive sensing, power management and user interface capabilities for a wide range of applications,” said Geoff Charubin, vice president of Worldwide Distribution for Cypress. “Today’s design engineers are eager for ways to quickly ramp up development with new technologies such as the Xilinx Spartan-6 family, and they have come to trust Avnet to provide strong support tools to do just that.”

PSoC 3 and PSoC 5 devices extend the world’s only programmable analog and digital embedded design platform, delivering unmatched time-to-market, integration, and flexibility across 8-, 16-, and 32-bit applications. PSoC 3 and PSoC 5 offer high-precision programmable analog including 12- to 20-bit delta-sigma ADCs, digital logic libraries full of dozens of drop-in peripherals, best-in-class power management and rich connectivity resources.

The revolutionary PSoC Creator IDE introduces a unique schematic-based design methodology along with fully tested, pre-packaged analog and digital peripherals easily customizable through user-intuitive wizards and APIs to meet specific design requirements.
