China Semiconductor Technology International Conference 2010 (CSTIC) a success

SHANGHAI, CHINA: SEMI and ECS announced the annual China Semiconductor Technology International Conference (CSTIC) held on March 18-19, 2010 was a great success, with 310 speakers and 711 attendees from around the world.

IBM Fellow, Stuart Parkin, Intel Senior Fellow, Yan Borodovsky, and Director of Yale Center for Microelectronics, Yale University, T.P. Ma, delivered the keynote speeches at the conference plenary session, and nearly 100 invited world’s leading experts gave their keynote or invited speeches in each symposium.

The CSTIC conference has become a world-class event with nine symposia covering most aspects of semiconductor manufacturing technology and emerging areas, including MEMS, LEDs and photovoltaic.

Hanming Wu, CSTIC Conference Chair, R&D Director of SMIC said: “I am very happy to see so many of the world’s leading experts from industry and academia at this CSTIC conference. With this excellent platform, managers and engineers from local companies and professors at leading universities, including SMIC, HHNEC, GSMC, Samsung, Sandisk, Peking University, Fudan University and more have the opportunities for face-to-face communication with the industry for leading edge technology and manufacturing solutions.”

With a record number of submitted papers and attendees, CSTIC has become a world-class technical event. Of the submitted papers, 33 percent were from the US, 8 percent from Europe, 4 percent from Japan, and 41 percent from China.

There were speakers from leading fabs and equipment and materials companies, including IBM, Intel, Samsung, TSMC, Infineon, Micron, SMIC, Applied Materials, TEL, KLA-Tencor and Dow Chemical. Speakers from leading universities (Harvard, MIT, UC Berkeley, Stanford, Yale, IMEC, Tsinghua University and Peking University) also presented during the conference and participated in discussions with attendees.

As a major semiconductor technology conference in China, CSTIC is organized jointly by ECS and SEMI. The joined strength of these two major world organizations has provided a consistent operational support for the conference. SEMI manages conference operation including finance, communication and logistics.

ECS is responsible for publication of the conference proceedings, and 190 manuscripts from CSTIC 2010 have passed critical review by the conference technical committee and have been published in ECS Transactions. Dan Martin, EVP of SEMI, Dr. Yue Kuo from ECS, and Mr. Tianchun Ye from IMECAS gave the opening speeches at the conference plenary session.

The 2010 CSTIC conference was co-organized by China’s High Tech Expert Committee (CHTEC), and sponsored by IEEE, CEMIA and CSE. It is also supported by the Shanghai Pudong Association for Science and Technology and the Shanghai Pudong New Area Science and Technology Development Fund.

Six students and young engineers won the SEMI ECS Student and Engineer Award (SESEA) at CSTIC 2010. They are Lili Ma from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China, Maxime Darnon from CNRS-LTM, Lijie Zhang from Peking University, Yonggen He from SMIC, Abudureheman Abudukelimu from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, and Younghun Kwon from Samsung.

Some conference keynote and invited speakers were invited to give lectures in Fudan University and Institute of Microelectronics, Chinese Academy of Sciences after the conference. The visits could lead to potential collaborations between research institutes in China and abroad. The 2011 CSTIC conference is scheduled to be held in March 2011 in Shanghai.
