In the fourth quarter, AMD accounted for 12.1 percent of worldwide MPU revenue, gaining 1.6 percentage points of share from the same period in 2008. AMD picked up 0.28 of a point of share over its position in the third quarter of 2009.
Intel in the fourth quarter held an 80.6 percent share of global microprocessor revenue, losing 1 percentage point of share from the fourth quarter of 2008. On a sequential basis, Intel gained 0.1 of a point from the 80.5 percent it held in the third quarter of 2009.
The smaller microprocessor suppliers collectively accounted for 7.3 percent of shipments in the fourth quarter, down 0.6 points from 7.9 percent during the same period in 2008.

Please note that the figure presents revenue for the entire global microprocessor market, including x86, RISC and other types of general-purpose microprocessors. This data is not limited to the PC-oriented x86 microprocessor market.

“This is an interesting development because PC Average Selling Prices (ASPs) dropped significantly during the course of 2009—especially for notebooks. So, the fact that AMD and Intel virtually maintained their market share at the annual level shows that neither supplier was overly punished by the dropping ASPs. It also indicates that neither was able to capitalize on the situation very effectively.”
