Ensemble designs selects Mindspeed crosspoints and reclockers for next-generation high-definition routing solutions

2011 NAB Show, NEWPORT BEACH, USA: Mindspeed Technologies Inc., a leading supplier of semiconductor solutions for network infrastructure applications, announced that Ensemble Designs, a Grass Valley, Calif. supplier of innovative solutions for video broadcast and post production, has selected Mindspeed’s crosspoints and highly integrated reclockers for its new family of compact, flexible routers.

“Mindspeed has played a key role in helping Ensemble develop its new family of extremely configurable routers,” said Cindy Zuelsdorf, marketing czar at Ensemble Designs. “Mindspeed’s M21125 crosspoint, combined with the features, integration and extremely low power consumption of the M21355 multi-channel reclocker, has enabled Ensemble to develop an energy-efficient solution with superior performance, flexible matrix sizes and robust operation.”

Ensemble’s Model 9430 and 9440 routers for High Definition and Standard Definition Serial Digital Interface video (3G/HD/SD SDI) and Asynchronous Serial Interface (ASI), take advantage of Mindspeed’s M21125 40x40 crosspoint device to deliver future-proofed matrix sizing, from a standard 8x2 input/output port configuration through 28x2 or 8x22 and any user-defined configurations in between, including both symmetrical (square), as well as asymmetrical (rectangular) options. Up to two 9440 expansion modules may be added to the base 9430 module to support a total of 11 different configurations from 18x2 to 8x12, or 21 different configurations from 28x2 to 8x22.

The router family, offered in Ensemble’s Avenue 3 rack unit (RU) frame, also takes advantage of the M21125 crosspoint’s Amplif-Eye signal-conditioning technology to maintain error-free, high-speed data transmission by compensating for signal insertion loss due to transmission through printed circuit board (PCB) traces. In addition, they leverage the company’s M21355 quad reclocker’s high level of functional integration, which yields more than 30 percent area savings in dense designs, as compared to alternative solutions that require additional multiplexers and switches on the board, as well as internal supply regulators and input/output termination.

“Ensemble has used Mindspeed’s broadcast video solutions to create a robust router design with unprecedented configuration flexibility,” said Poupak Khodabandeh, product line manager for Mindspeed’s high-performance analog business unit. “We are pleased to be supporting such an innovative company with router solutions that are enabling exciting new capabilities in applications ranging from master control bypass and quality control (QC) monitoring to off-site news bureaus, radio shows, and mobile video broadcasting from trucks and helicopters.”

Mindspeed’s M21125 40x40 crosspoint device is a non-blocking switching solution that incorporates the same industry-leading signal-conditioning technology used in the company’s larger crosspoints and signal conditioners. Each lane can operate independently to any data rate up to 3.8Gbps. The low power design provides a green solution, and the ability to power-down unused inputs and outputs offers additional power savings for various matrix sizes.

Mindspeed’s M21355 device is a quad-channel serial digital video reclocker with integrated trace equalization, automatic rate detect (ARD) circuitry, and a 16:4 crosspoint switch at the input. It consumes only 135mW power consumption per channel (1.2V operation) to enable low-power designs with minimal heat dissipation.
