BANGALORE, INDIA: Wipro Technologies today launched the next generation medical gateway solution. This solution, powered by Intel Atom processor, will enable improved care co-ordination between patients and their care providers and help overcome some of the challenges faced in traditional care delivery processes.
The medical gateway is an intelligent embedded platform, which enables users such as patients, doctors and other healthcare professionals to monitor, track and manage healthcare information from a remote location.
The solution enables real-time clinical review by automatically capturing vital data from multiple medical devices such as blood pressure monitors, glucose meters, pedometers, weighing scales etc. available with the patients.
“Health-conscious aging population in the developed markets is playing an active role in taking care of their own health. This has spurred advances in remote patient monitoring technologies that at the moment are beyond the financial reach of a large part of the population in the emerging economies” said Manimaran, General Manager, Medical Devices, Wipro Technologies.
“This medical gateway solution designed by Wipro running on the Intel Atom processor would help bridge this gap and enable faster time-to-market for medical device OEMs to launch customized products. We are pleased to be associated with Intel’s Embedded & Communication group, as a member of their India design house program & have received excellent support in helping us roll out these solutions.”
Medical devices can connect to the gateway solution through wired and wireless technologies (such as Bluetooth, Zigbee, Serial, USB) using both standard based (such as Continua, etc.) and proprietary protocols, to provide real time medical data, video and image transfer from a patient to doctor and in turn from a doctor to doctor.
This technology provides doctors the ability to evaluate patient care against quality measures for a variety of health conditions.
At the hospital side, the medical gateway has the ability to seamlessly transmit real-time medical data to application servers, physician handhelds, and hospital systems through GSM, broadband and dialup (using HL7/CCR/DICOM). The medical gateway enables vitals monitoring of clinical, fitness and social data, live video and audio conferencing for patient-doctor and doctor-doctor interactions, and collaboration with EMR systems for better patient management.
Wipro has done the end-to-end design and development of this high performance, low cost solution. It has brought a vast improvement on the existing solutions whose adoption has been low due to their high cost of ownership.
Sanat Rao, marketing director for emerging markets, Embedded and Communications Group, Intel South Asia, said: “This is a great example of how Intel architecture enables groundbreaking applications and the Intel India Design House program provides hardware and software support and training to get products to market. This unique device from Wipro will be extremely beneficial in improving healthcare facilities in India.”
