Conexant intros controller-based SmartModem with SPI interface

NEWPORT BEACH, USA: Conexant Systems Inc. announced the addition of the CX93040, a controller-based modem that utilizes an SPI interface. The CX93040 is available in three different versions, representing different speeds: a V.32bis version, a V.34 version and a V.92 version.

The latest in Conexant’s line of SmartModems, which integrate a microcontroller, digital signal processor, memory and a SmartDAA interface onto a single die, the CX93040 is well-suited to applications such as point-of-sale (POS) terminals and set-top-boxes where the modem is used as a back channel. A hardware modem that uses Conexant’s field proven, market leading, fourth generation silicon DAA, the CX93040 is easily adaptable and requires minimal host intervention.

Setting the CX93040 apart is the addition of an SPI interface, which allows for maximum flexibility in the main processor. Found in virtually every SOC and/or main processor, SPI is a shared bus working in a master/slave configuration, and requiring only one set of I/Os for all peripherals that attach to the SPI bus. This is in stark contrast to a UART port for an RS232 serial bus, which requires a set of dedicated I/Os for each peripheral. Using an SPI bus allows the CX93040 to eliminate a UART port on the SOC and its associated pins that would have otherwise been dedicated for the modem.

“Conexant is the number one modem supplier worldwide, and our three decades of technology experience in this space have been brought to bear in the design of the new CX93040, which has been built with the needs of our customers across the globe in mind,” noted Sailesh Chittipeddi, Conexant president and CEO. “Our proprietary SmartDAA technology allows for worldwide compliance with a single design – eliminating the need for country-specific modem configurations while reducing BOM costs and board space.”

Key features include:

* SPI interface.
* Up to V.92 modem with robust and field proven CID support.
* Support for POS specific fast connect protocols.
* Worldwide support from a single sku.
* Optional serial NVRAM interface for country profile storage and code upgrades.
* Reference design supporting 6KV for quick time to market.

The CX93040 is offered in three versions, 1) V.32bis, 2) V.34 and 3) V.92. Samples and evaluation board are available to qualified OEM/ODM customers now. The device is packaged in an environmentally friendly, RoHS/green-compliant 6x6mm 20pin QFN no-lead package. Prototype pricing inclusive of the DAA starts at $4.50 in 1K quantities.
