Lattice ships 50 millionth MachXO PLDs

HILLSBORO, USA: Lattice Semiconductor Corp. has shipped more than 50 million MachXO PLDs since their introduction just five years ago.

Broadly adopted in a wide range of high volume, cost sensitive applications, customers worldwide are taking advantage of the MachXO PLD family due to its exceptional combination of ease-of-use, flexibility, system integration and price.

“We use MachXO PLDs in our LED display systems because they deliver compelling system integration benefits combined with a flexible and cost effective architecture,” said Leo Stearns, CEO of Pix2o. “ MachXO PLDs provided us with the design flexibility and cost advantage we needed to improve our time to market and reduce overall product cost.”

The MachXO PLD family’ s unique system integration benefits have continued to drive its widespread adoption in a broad range of low-density applications that require general purpose I/O expansion, interface bridging and power-up management functions. Offering customers an “ All-in-One-PLD,” the MachXO PLD family provides distributed and embedded memory, built-in PLLs, high performance LVDS I/O, remote field upgrade (TransFR technology) and a low power sleep mode, all in a single device.

“The rapid adoption of MachXO PLDs reflects our customers’ decisions to quickly differentiate their designs using MachXO PLDs instead of high risk ASICs, inflexible ASSPs and discrete solutions,” said Gordon Hands, Lattice Director of Marketing for Low Density and Mixed Signal Solutions.

“In November 2009, MachXO PLD device shipments crossed 25 million units. Within the last 11 months, MachXO PLD device shipments have accelerated dramatically in a variety of end markets, including communications, consumer, computing, industrial and medical, making the MachXO PLD family one of Lattice’ s most successful and fastest growing products.”

Reference designs and easy-to-use development kits
In order to accelerate development time, 65 popular reference designs and the easy-to-use MachXO Mini Development Kit are available for prototyping cost sensitive low-density applications. Using the preloaded mini system-on-chip (mini SoC) design provided with the development kit, designers can test within minutes I2C, SPI and UART interfaces, in addition to the 8-bit LatticeMico8 microcontroller and low power sleep mode functionality.

Designers can rebuild these demonstration designs using the free downloadable reference design source codes in less than one hour. This provides a known good starting point for their own design explorations.

Alternatively, the MachXO Control Development Kit enables designers of system control applications to rapidly prototype typical board control functions such as temperature and current monitoring, power supply sequencing, fault logging, reset distribution and fan control used in system control designs.

All MachXO PLDs are fully production qualified and have been shipping for four years. MachXO PLDs feature a broad range of densities, packages and speed grade options and are available for ordering via the Lattice online store and through authorized Lattice distributors. MachXO PLDs are available for $1.25 for 256LUTs and $2.00 for 640 LUTs in volumes of 250K units.
