Sequans licenses MIPS Technologies' processor core

SUNNYVALE, USA: MIPS Technologies Inc. announced that 4G chipmaker Sequans Communications has selected its MIPS32 M14Kc synthesizable processor core for next-generation mobile solutions.

The M14K family of cores is the first to leverage the microMIPS™ Instruction Set Architecture (ISA) which maintains 98 percent of the high performance of the MIPS32 architecture while reducing code size by at least 30 percent, translating to significant silicon cost savings.

Sequans customers are leading equipment manufacturers and mobile operators that are building its technology into mobile WiMAX and LTE networks around the globe.

"We chose MIPS Technologies' M14Kc core because of its clear value proposition and alignment with our own goal of enabling mass-market 4G with solutions that are low-cost, high-performance and low-power," said Dr. Georges Karam, president and CEO, Sequans. "MIPS Technologies shows a commitment to supporting our business needs, and we look forward to a long and successful relationship with the company."

"We are pleased to work closely with Sequans to support its success in LTE," said Sandeep Vij, president and CEO, MIPS Technologies.

"MIPS Technologies has a strong and growing presence in mobile infrastructure, and now has multiple inroads to the mobile handset including 4G baseband processing. The MIPS architecture, with its high performance, low power consumption and small silicon footprint, is a great fit for these demanding applications. And our new M14K cores are experiencing the most rapid rate of adoption of any cores in the history of MIPS."
