Teknovus demos 10G-EPON with DOCSIS mediation layer

PETALUMA, USA: Teknovus, the leading provider of Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) chipsets for deployment of triple-play residential and business services in broadband access networks, invites cable operators and cable equipment vendors to view demonstrations of its integrated 10G-EPON/DMLTM solution.

Teknovus will be offering these demos at the CableLabs Summer Conference in Keystone, Colorado, from August 9-11.

Teknovus is the only PON chip vendor providing a combined EPON/DML solution to cable equipment vendors. MSOs can now leverage their DOCSIS infrastructure as they deploy EPON-based fiber networks, taking advantage of this proven FTTx architecture for advanced broadband services supporting residential, business and backhaul subscribers.

MSOs worldwide are investing in FTTx networks, expanding their fiber-rich networks to the last mile. Teknovus’ EPON chips and embedded software are supporting cable operators’ networks in North America and Asia, providing built-in traffic management capabilities with Quality of Service (QoS) for voice, data and video services to hundreds of subscribers simultaneously.

In addition, Teknovus’ chip architecture includes support for 3G and 4G cellular-backhaul clock and TDM transport, enabling a unified network for all wireline and wireless services.

Teknovus’ 10G-EPON platforms are being adopted by tier-one service providers and equipment vendors throughout North America, Asia and Europe. Teknovus’ 10G-EPON supports triple-lambda wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) for simultaneous downstream operation at 1.25Gb/s, 2.5Gb/s and 10Gb/s.

The system also supports dual-rate burst mode, enabling simultaneous operation of ONUs at both 1.25Gb/s and 10Gb/s in the upstream.

Teknovus designed its DML middleware in cooperation with leading US MSOs and cable equipment vendors. The DML middleware enables preservation of the MSO’s system integration model and all back-office systems.

New FTTx-based services can be provisioned and managed using the DOCSIS and PacketCable architecture, eliminating the rewriting of subscriber provisioning and management systems and costly retraining.

“The 10G-EPON standard is nearing ratification by the IEEE,” stated Dr. Glen Kramer, Teknovus Chief Scientist and Chair of IEEE 802.3av.

“EPON continues to demonstrate tremendous flexibility and adaptability to various network environments and service models, matching the success of Ethernet standards around the world. Demand for 10G-EPON is exceeding our expectations with telcos and MSOs worldwide evaluating this easy, next step in widely deployed PON networking.”

“Teknovus’ EPON/DML solution captures our proven EPON architecture for providing carrier-grade business, wireless backhaul and triple-play residential services,” stated Howard Abramson, Director of System Software at Teknovus.

“Using CableLabs specifications and industry standards, our DOCSIS Mediation Layer provides MSOs with familiar interfaces needed to accelerate a seamless transition to deeper fiber access.

“The multiple LLID (Logical Link Identifier), advanced traffic management, Multicast, IPv4 and IPv6, protection switching, diagnostic, and MEF features included in our OLT and ONU chips, provide the services, security, and manageability that the industry expects with DOCSIS 3.0, and is available in 1G/2.5G and 10G-EPON with DML.”
