LangFang Gao Shan selects Semitech power line communications to deliver leading smart grid systems to China

SINGAPORE: Semitech Semiconductor, a provider of power line communications solutions that enable the transformation of the electricity grid into a smart grid, announced that its GS18 power line communications (PLC) SoC is used in LangFang Gao Shan's smart grid control products deployed onto the China Southern Power Grid.

Headquartered in LangFang of Hebei province, China, LangFang Gao Shan is a leader in MV smart grid infrastructure solutions. LangFang Gao Shan., Ltd has launched its power-line monitoring for control and management system including the GS-1 digital transceiver, LGRO-1/14.5, LGRO- 2K/6.6 capacitive coupling. These products are currently deployed on the China Grid.

With its ability to operate reliably in noise prone environments, Semitech's GS18 SoC has played an important role in the deployment of LangFang Gao Shan's smart grid products. "Reliable communications on the China power grid are notoriously difficult due to noise and attenuation," noted Chen, chairman of LangFang Gao Shan. "Working with Semitech and Harbin University, we architected a technology that enables the most reliable power line communications available."

Semitech's GS18 uses modulation and signal processing technology that is adjustable in speed but also 'frequency agile' to deliver highly robust and reliable communications. The GS18 adapts to noisy environments, choosing the most effective transmission frequency. It also employs a Multi Access scheme to provide additional robustness and enables communication with multiple nodes simultaneously -- thus providing the customer better results via the highest throughput, most reliable communication available.

According to Mike Holt, vice president of marketing and sales for Semitech, "Working with LangFang Gao Shan and Harbin University has enabled Semitech to develop, deploy and prove in volume a much more robust power line communications solution."

LangFang Gao Shan provides medium voltage smart grid measurement monitoring and control systems that support the entire smart grid control processes, from data management to integration into existing IT structures. These systems support up to 250 end users per concentrator (at 1 x per 30 min.), with data memory stored in meter and concentrator and integrated security (on PLC and IP). These products include intelligent measurement monitoring and control distribution terminal carrier and high voltage three-phase intelligent power meters.

The intelligent monitoring and control distribution terminal carrier measures voltage and current on the MV grid and communicates the measurements to the utility using the Semitech GS18 PLC chip. The terminal achieves accurate measurement of smart grid readings. The system is used for remote meter reading, remote load control, pricing and user-side management, and independent accurate measurement of all voltage phases.

Unique capabilities of Semitech's GS18 include:

* Programmable modulation to improve communications reliability: OFDMA transceiver with 54 carriers and up to 18 channels.
* High data transfer rates in noisy environments: User selectable between BPSK modulation for higher carrier voltages and higher noise immunity and QPSK modulation for higher data rate dynamically.
* Narrow band emulation and low frequency mode putting channels in CENELEC frequency range.
* Selectable frequency range for each carrier dynamically.
* Transmit power regulation.
