Broadcom joins HomePlug Powerline Alliance board of directors

2011 International CES, PORTLAND, USA: The HomePlug Powerline Alliance, the world’s leading industry group for powerline network solutions, announced that Broadcom Corporation is now a Sponsor member and has appointed a director to the Alliance’s board.

Broadcom is one of the world's largest fabless communications semiconductor companies and a global leader in semiconductors for wired and wireless communications. Broadcom products enable the delivery of voice, video, data and multimedia to and throughout the home, the office and the mobile environment. Broadcom recently acquired Gigle Networks Inc., a privately-held company that develops system-on-a-chip (SoC) solutions for powerline networking.

“Having Broadcom support HomePlug is a significant event in the powerline networking market that helps to strengthen the HomePlug technology ecosystem,” said Kurt Scherf, Vice President, Principal Analyst, Parks and Associates. “With Broadcom’s portfolio of products spanning the communications, video delivery, and consumer electronics markets, its support of HomePlug’s endeavors reaches a wide range of service provider and CE connected devices in the home.”

"Adding powerline technology to our current line of home networking technologies including Ethernet, Wi-Fi, MoCA and DLNA allows us to offer service providers and consumer electronics manufacturers a complete set of options to deploy a whole-home connected environment," said Dan Marotta, executive VP and GM of Broadcom's Broadband Communications Group.

“Broadcom is a well known leader and innovator in the communications semiconductor market, and having them join our board clearly strengthens our organization,” said Rob Ranck, president of the HomePlug Powerline Alliance. “Having Broadcom enter the powerline networking market with HomePlug chips will accelerate adoption of the HomePlug technology family and add a powerful new dynamic to the market.”

The HomePlug technology family includes HomePlug AV for home broadband applications and HomePlug "Green PHY" (GP) targeting smart home and smart grid applications. The specifications are compliant with, and fully interoperable with the IEEE 1901 powerline standard.

The HomePlug Power Alliance works with key stakeholders to ensure all of its specifications are designed to meet the requirements of IPTV service providers, power utilities, equipment and appliance manufacturers, consumer electronics and other important stakeholders.

HomePlug operates the powerline networking industry's largest Compliance and Interoperability Certification Program to ensure true multi-vendor co-existence and interoperability. The program has certified more than 200 products and has begun certifying IEEE 1901 products.
