Cypress's TrueTouch multitouch touchscreen solution for large screens powers dual-screen Acer ICONIA

SAN JOSE, USA: Cypress Semiconductor Corp. announced that its TrueTouch solution for large multitouch touchscreens is featured in the new ICONIA tablet from Acer Inc.

ICONIA boasts two multitouch all-point displays that provide users with responsive, intuitive navigation and an enhanced content consumption experience. The ICONIA with TrueTouch is the industry’s first 10-finger touchscreen based on a multi-chip solution for large-size screens.

Cypress’s TrueTouch for large screens supports screens up to 14 inches. Cypress’s large-screen TrueTouch platform delivers low power consumption and high performance with full multitouch support. All of the leading ITO sensor vendors support TrueTouch, providing designers with flexibility, optimal performance and quality. Cypress’s large-screen TrueTouch platform expands its leadership position in small-screen portable electronics – such as handsets and portable navigation devices – into large-screen portable PC products and tablets.

ICONIA employs the Intel Core i5 processor and runs the Windows 7 operating system, providing a powerful platform for running applications of all kinds. Its two 14-inch displays can by merged together to show one window, or can independently display multiple windows.

Both displays have HD 1366x768 resolution, high-brightness Acer CineCrystal LED-backlit TFT LCDs and take advantage of the TrueTouch technology to deliver precise on-screen response. The displays offer palm rejection, a 10-finger virtual keyboard, and sophisticated touch control for multimedia, web browsers, and applications.

“Acer ICONIA offers an entirely new computing and all-point touch experience for users,” said David Lee, Associate Vice President of Mobile Computing Business Unit, Acer Inc. “The TrueTouch solution delivered the low power and outstanding performance we demanded, along with the flexibility to implement our vision for this product. Once again, we are presenting our customers with an intuitive and easy-to-use interface that they have come to expect from Acer.”

“The TrueTouch technology has proven itself inside millions of handheld devices worldwide,” said Norm Taffe, executive vice president of Cypress’s Consumer and Computation Division. “We’re excited to bring the same performance, flexibility, innovation and reliability to tablets and other large screen applications with an exceptional showcase for touch technology such as the ICONIA.”

Cypress offers the industry’s broadest portfolio of capacitive touchscreen solutions including single-touch, multitouch gesture and multitouch all-point offerings. Cypress was the first company to introduce multitouch all-point functionality, which can track 10 or more touches simultaneously. This multitouch all-point solution has been in mass production since 2008.

TrueTouch is the industry’s most flexible touchscreen architecture, which allows designers to implement differentiated features and make last-minute design iterations without board changes. In addition, TrueTouch devices offer Cypress’s world-class noise immunity with patented capacitive sensing technology that enables flawless operation in noisy RF and LCD environments.
