Hanvon selects Freescale’s i.MX51 applications processor for next gen eReader products

FTF 2010, SHANGHAI, CHINA: Leading Chinese eReader manufacturer Hanvon has selected Freescale Semiconductor’s i.MX51 applications processor for its next generation eReader solutions. Consumers can look forward to optimal digital reading experiences and longer battery life from Hanvon eReader products utilizing Freescale technology.

The Hanvon product based on Freescale’s i.MX51 processor is called the E-800. Weighing only one pound, the eReader features Wi-Fi capabilities, up to 32GB memory and an 8-inch E Ink panel with 1024x768 resolution. Other features include text-to-speech capabilities, a voice recorder, stereo playback and an embedded dictionary.

Leveraging the performance, integration and energy efficiency of i.MX processors, Freescale has established itself as the worldwide market share leader in applications processors for eReader products.

“Pairing the top eReader silicon provider with the leading Chinese eReader OEM is a winning combination,” said Bernd Lienhard, vice president and general manager of Freescale’s Multimedia Applications Division. “Freescale is honored to be selected by Hanvon, and we look forward to collaborating with the company to enable world-class products that take eReader product functionality and value to new levels.”

Freescale’s flagship i.MX51 processor delivers a compelling blend of features and functionality to meet the stringent requirements of eReader products. The processor combines an 800MHz ARM Cortex–A8 CPU with a large L2 cache memory to deliver high performance for fast rendering and page turns.

It also includes advanced power management features to help extend battery life and increase usage between charges, while innovative ultra-low standby power schemes extend battery standby time.

In addition to i.MX technology, Hanvon’s eReader will also incorporate Freescale’s MMA7660FC low-power capacitive accelerometer and MC13892 power management IC, resulting in highly advanced eReader products that deliver extremely low power consumption in a slim, ultra-thin design.

“Our Freescale-based eReader is ideal for consumers whose reading habits require more than two weeks of battery life and an electronic paper display for extended reading without eye strain,” said Ms. Zhang Xiaoxue, eBook vice general manager for Hanvon.

“Freescale’s i.MX51 processor enables us to expand our portfolio of eReader solutions and offer our customers products that are more ideal for both power and performance.”
